Look Locally For Your Granite Countertops May 11, 2021

If you are looking at remodeling your home in the coming months, you should strongly consider going with smaller companies around you such as Lexmar USA. Big box stores have their perks but at the end of the day who is going to take care of you better?  What is the bigger picture?

Support Local Business

When you support a small business, you are supporting someone’s dream.  Business owners are more passionate about their job when it is something they own and create.  Local businesses often provide better services and better products since they usually do not buy massive lots of lower quality materials at a cheap cost so they can mark them up. Local businesses are not as widely known so they have to stand out for the quality of their product and work since they do not have the crutch of a brand that spans thousands of locations. Additionally, local businesses are often more active in the community.

Keep a strong Local Economy

Through events like the pandemic, it is more important than ever to support local businesses when possible. You are supporting your local economy which means money stays in your community. When your local economy remains strong, some of the shockwaves felt globally do not cut as deep. Say you are considering a home improvement project, and you hope to get granite countertops. Where would you go to buy them? You may consider getting a referral from friends, visiting the place up the street you normally drive by, or contacting a national retailer.  We strongly urge you to consider the second option.

Bigger. Is It Better?

Big box stores tend to have everything you need – in one spot – often for cheaper than your local retailers. Though it is not the best quality product, many people choose this route. This may lead you to a few compromising situations.

Qualifications?

When you hire a professional through a local business, you typically go through a screening process with them, asking for their references, licensure, and additional qualifications. However, when you hire a professional through a national retailer, you probably would assume they vetted them for you. However, that is often not the case.

On the surface, hiring a professional through a big box store may appear to save you some time, but they do not always vet the professionals they contract out which could result in more problems down the road. These companies can be on the list because they dropped off their business cards or because they do business with the store, or they simply came in contact with the right person at the right time. Right now workers are scarce and bigger companies might overlook certain details to keep the revenue stream going.

This is when you should think local – support a local business with committed, qualified professionals.

Big Box Stores Don’t NEED You

Professionals from big box stores also lack the connection you might have with a local business owner. They typically are not screened and will continue to get work thrown their way, so they have less incentive to keep you happy and make a good connection with you as the customer. Professionals from local businesses tend to share your vision, want continued business from you down the road, and maybe even a recommendation from you. The professionals contracted through the national retailers do not need those things as much, so they are less likely to provide a high-quality service.

Pricing

Now that we have covered a number of points,  it is time to tackle pricing. While purchasing from a national retailer and hiring someone they recommended can be a less expensive route, it may cost more in the long term. Because these professionals are coming recommended to you, they do not have to be competitive in hiring. This means they may charge you more per hour than a professional you vet yourself. There are often deals at big box stores that include free installation with a certain size purchase. While the workers are getting paid, it can be minimal and while free is nice for the consumer, it is not usually a motivator for the worker. There are countless professionals out there from local businesses that offer great service, at a potentially lower price.

So, what does this mean for your home improvement project? It means you should think locally.
